“Put Watts into them, boys!”

Reverend James Caldwell, Battle of Springfield, 1780

Reverend James Caldwell was a Pastor, husband, and father of nine in Elizabethtown, NJ at the time of the War for Independence. He joined the fight, only to have his wife murdered inside a church during a battle close by in retaliation for his participation. Undeterred in his mission to serve God and his fledgling nation, he continued on to the Battle of Springfield. The situation became dire when the continental troops found themselves wanting for the paper wadding needed to fire their weapons. Knowing the resources he could find in a church, Caldwell helped the troops to the pages of the Isaac Watts hymn books. He bolstered them with the above quote, ultimately supporting a total victory by the Continental Army and supporting militia, despite being outnumbered from the start. The resources the British had gathered years before for worship ultimately served to contribute to their defeat at the hands of this faithful Reverend.

When we look around, we need the courage and wit to be men of action, glorifying God and pursuing the good of America in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. "Pro Deo et Patria", or "For God and Country" must be the foundation behind our faithfulness each day. May the Lord in His mercy deliver us.
