Memento Mori

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:12

Death is not a costume. It is the appointment every man will keep. The old phrase Memento Mori, “remember you must die” was never meant to produce despair. It was meant to produce wisdom. Monks kept skulls on their desks. Puritans wrote it into their sermons. Painters filled canvases with pipes, books, and bones to serve as a solemn reminder that mortality rests on every horizon, and life should be lived with an awareness of limited time.

Christians need not flee from mortality. We can look it in the face, because the grave has already been emptied. The same Lord who numbered our days also rose on the third. Not only that, but He promises us the same resurrection to eternal life with Him. Remembering death is how we remember to live—faithfully, plentifully, and without the luxury of delay.

Wear Memento Mori as a daily rebuke to sloth and a daily summons to courage. The time is short. The work remains. Stand Sure while you still have breath, and do it with a laugh erupting as often as possible.
